Conveyors calculator
Required Line Speed Calculator
Use this calculator before changing a VFD setpoint, adding a lane, or promising a higher run rate. It turns target output, product pitch, and realistic efficiency into the feet-per-minute speed the line must hold.
What this calculator does
- Calculate the conveyor or production line speed needed to meet demand at a selected product pitch and efficiency.
- a production engineer needs a speed setpoint that matches customer demand without guessing on the floor
- The result is the line speed required to hit the output target at the entered spacing and efficiency.
Formula used
- Required throughput rate = required output ÷ line efficiency
- Required line speed = required throughput rate × product pitch ÷ 720
Inputs explained
- Required good output: Use the good-unit rate the line must deliver after rejects.
- Product pitch on conveyor: Measure leading edge to leading edge at the planned spacing.
- Expected line efficiency: Use recent efficiency for similar product and staffing.
How to use the result
- Use it during SKU setup, line trials, capacity reviews, and conveyor or filler speed matching.
- It does not check motor limits, product stability, inspection dwell, or downstream machine maximum speed.
Common questions
- What is Required Line Speed for? Calculate the conveyor or production line speed needed to meet demand at a selected product pitch and efficiency.
- What information do I need before using it? You need required good output, product pitch, and realistic line efficiency.
- When is the result only an estimate? The result is only a starting setpoint until verified with real product, actual spacing, and downstream equipment limits.
- How can I use the result on the line? Use the speed to compare against conveyor design speed, decide whether to reduce pitch, or justify extra lanes or equipment.
