Quote margin tells a hospital-equipment and clinical-furniture maker how much profit a specific bid actually carries before they commit to it. Estimators and sales engineers run it on every quote for beds, stretchers, exam tables and built-in casework so they don't win an order that loses money once steel, actuators, labor and freight are counted. Because medical-furniture tenders are competitive and often volume-driven, a few points of margin decide whether a job is worth taking. The model subtracts fully-loaded cost from the quoted price, then expresses the result against a reference amount so margin is comparable across orders of different sizes.

  • It is only as good as the cost estimate fed in — if the total cost omits freight, install, warranty reserve or scrap, the margin shown is optimistic and the job may underperform.

Common questions

  • How do you calculate quote margin? Subtract total estimated cost from the quoted price to get dollar margin, then divide by the reference amount and multiply by 100. A $1,850 quote on $1,480 of cost gives a $370 margin, or 20% against the $1,850 price.
  • What is a good margin on hospital equipment quotes? It varies by product and competition, but commodity clinical furniture often runs in the teens while specialized powered beds and custom casework can carry more. The 20% in the example is a reasonable target for a competitive standard-product bid.
  • Margin vs markup — what's the difference? Margin is profit as a percentage of price; markup is profit as a percentage of cost. The $370 example is 20% margin on the $1,850 price but 25% markup on the $1,480 cost — quote against price to avoid overstating profitability.
  • Should the reference amount be price or cost? For a true margin percentage use the quoted price as the reference, as in the example. Using cost instead gives you markup, which is a different and larger number for the same dollar profit.
  • Why is my actual margin lower than the quoted margin? Usually because the cost estimate left something out — freight, installation, warranty reserve, scrap or currency moves on imported actuators. Load every real cost into the total before quoting.
