Common questions

  • How do you calculate quote margin? Subtract the required amount (cost) from the available amount (price), then divide by the reference amount. With a price of 125, cost of 100 and reference of 100, the margin is (125 - 100) / 100 = 25%.
  • What is a good margin on a sterilization quote? It depends on the model - contract sterilization service work often targets 25-40% gross, while pass-through-heavy pouch converting can run thinner. The 25% in the example is a reasonable floor for a validated sterile barrier job carrying testing overhead.
  • Should validation cost go in the required amount? Yes - if a new program requires ISO 11607 seal validation, dose mapping or BI qualification, amortize that cost into the required amount, or the quote will show a margin you never actually earn.
  • What reference amount should I use? Using cost as the reference gives markup-on-cost; using price as the reference gives margin-on-price. Be consistent across quotes so a 25% here means the same as a 25% on the next job.
  • Price minus cost vs margin percent - why divide? The raw gap (25 in the example) does not scale across jobs of different size. Dividing by a reference turns it into a percentage you can compare against your target and across quotes of any dollar value.
