- How do you calculate total PPE cost? Multiply units by the per-item cost, then add fitting/distribution labor and program overhead. For 1,000 units at $12 plus $1,800 labor and $600 overhead: 12,000 + 1,800 + 600 = $14,400.
- What is the cost per unit of PPE? Divide total fully burdened cost by units issued. In the example, $14,400 ÷ 1,000 = $14.40 per unit — noticeably higher than the $12 sticker price once labor and overhead are included.
- Why include labor and overhead in PPE cost? Fit-testing respirators, distributing gear and running the program consume real hours and admin cost. Ignoring them understated the $12 item as truly $14.40 — a 20% gap that matters at scale.
