- How do you calculate bio-based content percentage? Divide the weight of bio-based material by the total formulation weight and multiply by 100. With 720 kg of bio-based material in a 1,000 kg batch, that is 720 ÷ 1000 × 100 = 72% bio-based content.
- What is a good bio-based content percentage? It depends on the claim. USDA BioPreferred thresholds for many product categories start around 25%, but premium 'high bio-content' compounds target 70% or more. At 72% against a 70% target, the example formulation clears a high-bio claim with a 2-point cushion.
- Why is my bio-based content below target? The gap result shows the shortfall in points. In the example the result is -2 points, meaning you are 2 points short of target — typically caused by a fossil-based plasticizer, impact modifier, or filler diluting the renewable fraction.
- Is mass-based bio content the same as ASTM D6866? No. This calculator is a mass balance of ingredients. ASTM D6866 measures the fraction of carbon that is biogenic via carbon-14. - Does the filler count in total formulation weight? Yes. Every component you add — resin, plasticizer, filler, masterbatch, processing aids — belongs in the total formulation weight, which is why mineral fillers pull the percentage down even though they add no fossil carbon.
