Common questions

  • How do you calculate PCB panel utilization? Divide the total board image area by the usable panel area. With 128 sq in of board images on a 180 sq in usable panel, utilization is 128 / 180 = 71.1%.
  • What is a good PCB panel utilization? Most fabricators aim for 70-85% on production panels. Below 65% you are paying for a lot of scrap laminate; above 85% you risk too-thin rails and routing channels. The 71.1% in the example is acceptable but leaves room to close the 6.9-point gap to an 78% target.
  • Why doesn't panel utilization reach 100%? Panels need tooling rails for handling, fiducials for registration, break-tabs or routed channels between boards, and clearance from the panel edge. Those features consume 15-30% of the panel that can never carry board image.
