Common questions
- How do you calculate a paint mix ratio? Express each component in parts per the datasheet, then add them for the total. Here 10 paint + 8 catalyst + 6 reducer + 4 additive parts total 28 mix parts, which lets you scale the batch by any multiplier.
- What does a 4:1:1 mix ratio mean? It means 4 parts base paint to 1 part catalyst to 1 part reducer, measured in the same unit. Keep the proportions constant and multiply all parts by the same factor to make more or less.
- Can I mix paint by weight instead of volume? Only if the datasheet gives a weight ratio, because components have different densities. Most automotive ratios are by volume using a graduated mixing cup or ratio-marked stick.
- What happens if I add too much hardener? Excess catalyst can make the film brittle, cause cracking, shorten pot life, and hurt gloss. Too little leaves the film soft and slow to cure. Stick to the specified parts.
