From Barrel to Part: How the Whole Energy Complex Prices a Single Molded Component
A single molded part carries crude, natural gas, and electricity inside it, at different removes. Here is the whole energy complex traced from the wellhead to the cost of one component, with each link measured.
Pick up a molded plastic part and you are holding several energy markets at once. The resin is crude and natural gas, several conversions removed. The process that melted and formed it is electricity and, often, natural gas. The additives and colorants are petrochemicals. A manufacturer who tracks only the electric bill sees a fraction of the energy embedded in the part. This feature traces the full complex, Brent at $88.90/bbl (Aug 3, 2026), Henry Hub gas at $2.81/MMBtu, delivered industrial gas at $4.27/Mcf, into the cost of a single component, measuring each link so the whole chain is visible instead of just the last step.
Link one: the feedstock, crude and gas
The part's material begins as hydrocarbons. Crude, at $88.90/bbl (with no prior-year reading archived yet), and natural gas liquids feed the crackers that make the base chemicals that polymerize into resin. Henry Hub gas, the US benchmark, sits at $2.81/MMBtu (Aug 3, 2026), with no prior-year reading archived yet, and it matters twice: as a feedstock for the petrochemical chain and, later, as a process fuel. The feedstock link is why resin prices, at 310.75 index (1982=100) (Jun 2026), up about 17.2% from a year ago, correlate with the energy complex but lag it, damped and delayed by every conversion between the wellhead and the pellet.
Link two: the conversion, resin and chemicals
Between hydrocarbon and part sit the resin producers and chemical makers, each adding cost, margin, and lag. The resin index and the industrial chemicals index, at 343.72 index (1982=100) (Jun 2026), up about 15.1% from a year ago, capture this middle of the chain. This is where the energy signal gets muddied: a crude move does not pass through cleanly, because resin and chemical producers have their own supply-demand balances, inventories, and contract structures that speed up or slow down the transmission. The practical consequence is a lag long enough to plan around, a sustained energy move gives weeks to months of warning before it reaches the resin invoice.

Link three: the process, gas and power
Now the part is made, and energy enters a second time as process cost. Melting and forming draw electricity, at 8.7¢/kWh (May 2026), up about 5.1% from a year ago, and thermal steps often draw delivered natural gas at $4.27/Mcf, down about 9.0% from a year ago. Unlike the feedstock link, this one is immediate: a power or gas move hits the process cost of the very next part with no chain lag. So the energy complex reaches the component twice, slowly through the material and instantly through the process, and a full cost model has to account for both timings or it will misjudge when an energy move actually lands.
A molded part is a barrel of oil and a therm of gas that took a long, lagged road to become material, plus the kilowatt-hours that formed it on the spot. Track one and you see a third of the energy in the part.
Assembling the energy view of a part
The complete energy view of a component sums the embedded feedstock energy in the material (arriving with a lag, readable early from crude and gas) and the direct process energy of making it (arriving immediately, readable from power and delivered gas). Modeled this way, an energy move becomes predictable rather than surprising: a crude and gas rally is a forward warning on the material line, while a power move is a same-month hit on the process line. A manufacturer who watches the whole complex, not just the electric meter, gets both the early warning and the immediate read, and can time buys, escalation clauses, and efficiency projects to whichever link is moving.

Across the five-year record natural gas is still working down from a peak rather than building a new level. The high came at the close of 2022 near $8.08, and today's $4.27 sits 47% below it, in the lower third of its five-year range. That gap is the fact worth carrying, because the reference point most people hold in their heads is the peak, and the record has spent years saying the peak was the anomaly.
