How Do You Calculate Machine Availability?
Availability, uptime, and OEE availability get used as synonyms and produce different numbers from the same shift. The gap is entirely in what you put in the denominator.
Machine availability is run time divided by planned production time, expressed as a percentage. That single sentence is the answer, and it is also where the confusion starts, because "planned production time" carries three common definitions and each produces a different number from the same shift. An availability figure quoted without its denominator is not a measurement, it is a claim.
The worked example that separates them
Take a 480-minute shift with 30 minutes of planned maintenance and 45 minutes of unplanned breakdown, leaving 405 minutes of actual running. The OEE definition excludes planned downtime from the denominator, giving 405 over 450, or 90.0%. Asset utilization uses the full scheduled time, giving 405 over 480, or 84.4%. Both are correct. They answer different questions, and the gap between them is exactly your planned maintenance load.

Which one belongs where
Match the definition to the decision
- OEE availability, for improving the process. It isolates unplanned loss, which is the part a maintenance program can attack.
- Asset utilization, for capital decisions. When you are deciding whether to buy another machine, planned downtime is capacity you do not have and belongs in the denominator.
- Contractual availability, for equipment agreements and service contracts, where the definition is whatever the contract says and is frequently neither of the above.
The idle-time question nobody agrees on
The hardest case is a machine that could run but has no work. Excluding no-demand idle time from the denominator flatters the equipment and hides a sales problem inside an operations metric. Including it makes maintenance accountable for order intake. The defensible approach is to exclude it from availability but report it separately and prominently on the same page, so nobody has to choose between an honest availability figure and an honest capacity picture.
Availability arguments are almost never about the numerator. Run time is run time. Every dispute lives in what you agreed to put underneath it.
Availability is one of three, and the weakest alone
Availability multiplied by performance and quality gives OEE, and availability on its own is easy to game. A machine run slowly and producing scrap can post excellent availability, because it never stopped. That is why the three factors travel together, and why a single availability number presented without its performance and quality siblings should always prompt the question of what the other two were doing.
