Electricity is the operating cost hiding inside every machine-hour rate, and most rates are set once and never revisited. Here is the current price and the arithmetic that turns a rate change into real annual dollars.

The industrial electricity price reached 8.7¢/kWh as of May 2026, up about 5.1% from a year ago. For a plant, that number is not abstract; it is embedded in every machine-hour rate through the utility line of overhead, and because most absorption rates are set annually, a mid-year move in power quietly makes those rates wrong. The fix is not complicated, but it does require running the pass-through arithmetic instead of assuming last year's rate still holds.

The pass-through, worked

Take a 40 kW machining cell running two shifts, roughly 4,000 productive hours a year. At the current 8.7¢/kWh, or about $0.087 per kWh, that cell draws about $13,936 of electricity a year at full load, before compressed air, lighting, and HVAC overhead attributable to it. The sensitivity is the useful part: every one-cent-per-kWh move in the rate shifts that single cell's annual power cost by roughly $1,600. Across a shop of a dozen such cells, a penny is a five-figure annual swing that belongs in the overhead rate the moment it happens, not at next year's true-up.

Where the penny goes next

Energy-intensive processes feel this first and hardest: furnaces, ovens, compressors, and anything running plasma or induction. For those, electricity can rival labor as the dominant machine-rate input, and an escalation clause tied to the published industrial price is a reasonable ask on any long fixed-price contract. For lighter processes the effect is smaller but still real once summed across a shop. Either way, the discipline is the same: reprice the utility component of overhead whenever the industrial electricity series makes a material move, using the neutral published number as the reference.

The rate behind every machine hour

Over the five-year record industrial power has stayed inside a recognizable band, running 6.7¢ in May 2021 to 9.4¢ in August 2022 and sitting today in the upper third of its five-year range at 8.7¢. The absence of a trend is itself the planning input: in a series this steady, a move that would be noise elsewhere is a real signal, because the base rate of movement is so low.
