Natural Gas Hits Your Plant Through Four Doors, and You Only Watch One

Most plants track natural gas as a utility line and stop there. But gas reaches the cost base through four separate doors, feedstock, power generation, direct process heat, and chemical inputs, and three of them never show up on the gas bill. Here is the full exposure, traced door by door.

Ask a plant manager about natural gas exposure and they will point to the utility bill for the burners and boilers. That is one door. There are three more, and together they often dwarf the one everybody watches. Natural gas, at $4.27/Mcf delivered to industrial users (May 2026), down about 9.0% from a year ago, with the Henry Hub benchmark at $2.81/MMBtu, is not just a fuel. It is a feedstock, a power source, a process heat source, and a chemical input, and a move in the gas market arrives through all four channels at once, most of them invisible on the line item a plant actually tracks.

Door one: direct heat (the one you see)

The visible door is combustion: furnaces, boilers, ovens, dryers, and kilns that burn gas directly. This is the exposure on the utility bill, and for thermal-heavy processes, melting, heat treatment, drying, it is large and immediate, with a gas move flowing to cost per part in the same month. But treating this as the whole exposure is the mistake, because it is often the smallest of the four for a plant that buys gas-derived materials rather than just burning gas.

Doors two and three: feedstock and chemicals

The invisible doors are the material ones. Natural gas and its liquids are the feedstock for the petrochemical chain, so the resins a molder buys, at 310.75 index (1982=100) (up about 17.2% from a year ago), and the industrial chemicals a process plant consumes, at 343.72 index (1982=100) (up about 15.1% from a year ago), both carry the gas price inside them, several conversions and a lag removed. A plant that buys a lot of plastic or chemicals is a large natural-gas consumer that never sees a therm on its own bill; it pays for the gas embedded in its materials. These doors move slower than direct heat, damped and delayed by the chain, which is exactly why they surprise the buyers who only watch the utility line.

Door four: the power plant

The fourth door is the grid. A large share of US electricity is generated by burning natural gas, so the industrial power price, at 8.7¢/kWh (up about 5.1% from a year ago), carries a gas component too. A plant that has electrified its processes to escape direct gas exposure has not escaped gas; it has swapped a direct door for an indirect one, and a gas spike still reaches it through the power bill. This is the door that makes "we don't use much gas" a dangerous assumption, because almost every plant uses gas at one remove through the electricity it consumes.

A plant that watches only its gas bill is measuring one of four exposures and calling it the total. The other three arrive in the resin, the chemical, and the electricity.

Adding up the real exposure

The honest way to size natural-gas exposure is to sum all four doors: direct combustion, plus the gas embedded in gas-derived materials, plus the gas component of purchased power. For a thermal-heavy plant, door one dominates. For a plastics or chemicals converter, doors two and three dominate and the direct bill is a footnote. For an electrified plant, door four is the hidden one. A gas move that looks small against the utility line can be large against the full four-door exposure, which is why a plant serious about energy risk models all four rather than hedging only the therm it can see. With gas currently sliding, knowing which doors dominate your cost base is the difference between a real hedge and a false sense of safety.

All four doors, six years of them

Across the five-year record natural gas is still working down from a peak rather than building a new level. The high came at the close of 2022 near $8.08, and today's $4.27 sits 47% below it, in the lower third of its five-year range. That gap is the fact worth carrying, because the reference point most people hold in their heads is the peak, and the record has spent years saying the peak was the anomaly.
