Frame Paint Scrap Calculator

Frame paint scrap rate is the share of painted bicycle and e-bike frames rejected for finish defects — runs, orange peel, contamination, poor coverage or color mismatch — out of all frames inspected. Paint-line supervisors and quality engineers track it because powder-coat and wet-paint scrap is expensive: a scrapped frame has already absorbed tube prep, welding, masking and pretreatment cost before it fails at finish. Comparing the live rate to a target tells you instantly whether the booth is in control or drifting. On a frame line, even a one-point swing in paint scrap moves real money, so this is one of the most-watched finishing KPIs.

Common questions

  • How do you calculate paint scrap rate? Divide scrapped painted frames by inspected painted frames and multiply by 100. With 18 frames scrapped out of 720 inspected, the paint scrap rate is 2.5%.
  • What is a good paint scrap rate for bicycle frames? Mature powder-coat frame lines typically run 1-3% paint scrap; under 1.5% is strong, and above 4-5% signals booth, pretreatment or curing problems. The 2.5% in the example is acceptable but a full point over the 1.5% target.
  • What does the gap to target mean? It is your live rate minus your target, in points. Here 2.5% against a 1.5% target gives a +1.0-point gap, meaning you are running one full point worse than allowed and need corrective action.
  • Why use scrap rate instead of just a defect count? A raw count of 18 scraps means nothing without volume. Eighteen out of 720 is 2.5% and tolerable; 18 out of 200 would be 9% and a crisis. The rate normalizes for throughput so shifts and days compare fairly.
  • Should rework be counted as scrap? No — only frames truly scrapped belong in the numerator. Frames stripped and recoated are rework, tracked separately. Mixing them inflates the scrap rate and hides the real cost split between waste and rework labor.
