Cold Chain & Temperature-Controlled Operations calculator
Cold Chain SLA Attainment Calculator
Cold chain SLA attainment is the percentage of temperature-controlled shipments that met every service term — in-temperature, on-time, and fully documented — out of all temperature-controlled shipments. Cold chain account managers, QA teams, and 3PL operations leaders use it to report performance to pharma, food, and biologics customers whose contracts carry penalty clauses for missed cold chain commitments. It matters because a single point of attainment can mean thousands of dollars in chargebacks and, more importantly, product that has to be quarantined or destroyed. Tracking it against a contractual target tells you instantly whether you are exposed to penalties.
What this calculator does
- Calculate cold chain SLA attainment from compliant shipments compared with total temperature-controlled shipments.
- measuring compliant temperature-controlled shipments against an SLA target
- It computes the percentage of cold chain shipments that met SLA and the point gap between that result and your target SLA.
Formula used
- Cold Chain SLA Attainment = SLA-compliant cold chain shipments ÷ total temperature-controlled shipments × 100
- Gap to target = target cold chain SLA - cold chain sla attainment

How to use the result
- Use it for monthly customer scorecards, QBRs, and any time you need to know whether you are tracking above or below a contractual cold chain commitment.
- A shipment is binary here — compliant or not — so the metric does not weight a minor late delivery the same as a full temperature excursion; pair it with excursion severity data.
Current U.S. benchmarks
- U.S. manufacturing runs at 75.6% of capacity (Federal Reserve, May 2026). New factory orders are up 2.3% year over year (Census).
Common questions
- How do you calculate cold chain SLA attainment? Divide SLA-compliant shipments by total temperature-controlled shipments and multiply by 100. With 286 of 300 shipments compliant, attainment is 95.33%.
- What is a good cold chain SLA attainment? Pharma and biologics contracts commonly demand 97–99%; food cold chain often sits at 95–98%. The example reaches 95.33% against a 97% target, leaving a 1.67-point gap that needs closing to avoid penalties.
- What counts as an SLA-compliant cold chain shipment? One that met every contracted term — stayed within the specified temperature range, delivered within the on-time window, and arrived with complete temperature documentation. Failing any one term makes the whole shipment non-compliant.
- What does the gap to target tell me? It is target SLA minus actual attainment. The 1.67-point gap in the example means roughly 5 more of the 300 shipments needed to comply to hit the 97% target — a concrete recovery number to work toward.
- SLA attainment vs on-time delivery — what's the difference? On-time delivery only measures the clock; cold chain SLA attainment also requires the shipment to have stayed in temperature and arrived documented, so it is a stricter, multi-condition measure.
