Furniture, Fixtures & Interior Products calculator
Upholstery material yield Calculator
Upholstery material yield is the share of fabric, leather or vinyl issued to the cutting table that ends up as usable cut pieces rather than offcuts and waste. Cut-room managers and cost estimators in furniture and seating shops track it because upholstery material is often the single largest variable cost, and a few points of yield swing the margin on every frame. Comparing the achieved rate against a target makes nesting, defect and shrinkage problems visible before they erode profit. It is the metric that tells you whether your markers and cutters are getting the most out of expensive goods.
What this calculator does
- Calculate upholstery material yield by comparing usable cut fabric, vinyl, leather, or cover panels against total material issued.
- Use it when an upholstery shop needs to track roll yield, fabric yardage loss, pattern matching waste, cutting scrap, sewing defects, or re-cut material for chairs, cushions, panels, and soft seating.
- It computes the percentage of issued upholstery material that becomes usable cut pieces, and the gap in points between that rate and your target yield.
Formula used
- Upholstery material yield rate = usable upholstery material cut ÷ total upholstery material issued × 100
- Upholstery material yield gap to target = calculated rate - target upholstery material yield

How to use the result
- Use it when reviewing cut-room performance, validating a marker or nesting layout, or costing material on an upholstery job.
- Yield alone does not distinguish causes; a low number could come from poor nesting, fabric defects, directional or pattern-match constraints, or shrinkage, and the metric will not tell you which.
Current U.S. benchmarks
- The producer price index for lumber and wood products stands at 280.994 (BLS, May 2026), up 4.2% from a year earlier. Quotes priced off last quarter's material cost miss this move.
- The U.S. has 14,378 furniture and related products establishments employing about 355,594 workers (Census County Business Patterns, 2023).
Common questions
- How do you calculate upholstery material yield? Divide usable material cut by total material issued and multiply by 100. With 185 yd usable from 225 yd issued, yield is 82.22%, which is 1.78 points below an 84% target.
- What is a good upholstery material yield? It depends on pattern matching and fabric width, but plain goods often target 85-90% while large-repeat patterned or directional fabrics may only reach 75-82%. The 84% target in the example is realistic for mixed work.
- Why is my yield below target? Common causes are loose nesting, fabric flaws cut around, pattern-match and nap direction constraints, and edge shrinkage. The 1.78-point gap in the example flags a small but real loss worth investigating in the marker.
- What is the difference between yield and waste? They are complements: a yield of 82.22% means 17.78% of issued material became waste. Tracking yield focuses attention on what you keep; tracking waste focuses on what you lose.
- How much does a yield point cost? On 225 yd issued, one point is about 2.25 yd. Multiply that by your material cost per yard and by annual volume to see why chasing two or three points across a year matters.
