Wire, Cable & Conductor Manufacturing calculator

Cooling Trough Dwell Time Calculator

Calculate cable residence time along the wetted cooling path. Enter total submerged path, line speed and your qualified minimum residence time.

What this calculator does

  • Calculate cable residence time along the wetted cooling path.

Formula used

  • Residence (s) = Wetted path (m) × 60 ÷ Line speed (m/min)
  • Residence margin = Residence − Entered minimum
  • Speed at minimum = Wetted path × 60 ÷ Required seconds

Inputs explained

  • Cable Path in Cooling Water: Actual wetted cable path including every submerged pass.
  • Cable Line Speed: Axial speed through the wetted path.
  • Qualified Minimum Residence: Minimum residence specified for this qualified process.

How to use the result

  • Best suited to cooling path review, line speed residence checks.
  • Temperature, heat transfer, water flow and cooling acceptance are not modeled.

Current U.S. benchmarks

  • The producer price index for primary nonferrous metals (a broad metals benchmark, not copper alone) stands at 544.731 (BLS, Aug 2026), up 49.3% from a year earlier. Quotes priced off last quarter's material cost miss this move. Global copper trades at $13,543 per tonne (IMF via FRED, Jul 2026).
  • The U.S. has 5,397 electrical equipment and appliances establishments employing about 369,437 workers (Census County Business Patterns, 2023).

Common questions

  • Is trough length always the wetted path? No. Multiple passes or partly dry sections change the actual cable path in water.
  • Does sufficient time guarantee cooling? No. Construction, temperatures and heat transfer must also satisfy the qualified process.
  • Where does minimum time come from? Use the validated process for the actual cable and cooling conditions.
  • Can zero wetted length be entered? Yes. It produces zero water residence and exposes the shortfall to any positive requirement.
