Wire, Cable & Conductor Manufacturing calculator
Ideal Level-Wound Length Calculator
Estimate cable length in complete square-aligned winding layers. Enter reel and cable dimensions plus reserved radial clearance at 0.001 mm resolution.
What this calculator does
- Estimate cable length in complete square-aligned winding layers.
Formula used
- Turns per layer = Floor(Usable width ÷ Cable diameter)
- Layers = Floor(Max(0, Flange − 2 × Clearance − Barrel) ÷ (2 × Cable diameter))
- No complete turn means no wound layer
- Ideal length = π × Turns × Layers × (Barrel + Layers × Cable diameter)
- Wound diameter = Barrel + 2 × Layers × Cable diameter
Inputs explained
- Flange Diameter: Reel flange diameter defining the outer envelope.
- Barrel Diameter: Bare winding barrel outside diameter.
- Usable Winding Width: Clear traverse width available for complete turns.
- Cable Outside Diameter: Round cable diameter used for square-aligned packing.
- Reserved Radial Clearance: Radial space reserved below the flange edge.
How to use the result
- Best suited to ideal winding comparison, reel geometry screening.
- Nesting, helical advance, crossovers and cable compression are excluded. Bend limits, shipping clearance requirements and reel strength need separate checks.
Current U.S. benchmarks
- The producer price index for primary nonferrous metals (a broad metals benchmark, not copper alone) stands at 544.731 (BLS, Aug 2026), up 49.3% from a year earlier. Quotes priced off last quarter's material cost miss this move. Global copper trades at $13,543 per tonne (IMF via FRED, Jul 2026).
- The U.S. has 5,397 electrical equipment and appliances establishments employing about 369,437 workers (Census County Business Patterns, 2023).
Common questions
- Is this Southwire’s rated reel capacity? No. This is a different ideal square-aligned geometry; Southwire includes additional packing assumptions.
- Why are partial turns and layers excluded? The selected model counts only complete aligned rows and radial layers.
- Why can the answer be zero? Usable width or radial depth may not fit one complete cable layer.
- Can I enter more than three decimals? No. Finer dimensions are blocked to preserve exact count boundaries at the declared resolution.
