Estimating the Cost of a Fire System Pressure Vessel
A fire suppression tank quote is dominated by things that are not the tank: code certification, foundations, and the installed piping the vessel is only one component of.
Pricing a pressure vessel for a fire suppression system is a question that sounds like it should have a catalogue answer and does not, because the vessel itself is one item in an installed system and rarely the most expensive one. Understanding which cost drivers dominate is more useful than any single price, since the drivers are what a design decision can actually move.
What actually drives the vessel price
In rough order of leverage
- Design pressure and diameter together, since shell thickness scales with both, and thickness drives material weight, forming difficulty, and weld volume simultaneously.
- Code stamp and inspection requirements. A vessel built to a pressure vessel code with third-party inspection carries documentation, hydrostatic testing, and certification effort that a non-code tank does not.
- Material and lining. Carbon steel with an internal coating versus stainless changes both material cost and fabrication approach.
- Nozzle count and configuration, because every penetration is a reinforcement calculation, a weld, and an inspection point.
- Orientation and supports, since a vertical vessel needs a skirt or legs engineered for seismic and wind loading in most jurisdictions.
Material is a moving input
Plate steel is the base material for most such vessels, and its cost tracks a published index rather than sitting still: steel mill products producer prices currently read 361.44 (Jun 2026, BLS). A quote held open for months carries real exposure to that index, which is why fabricators either price with a validity window or attach an escalation clause. If you are budgeting a project a year out, budget the band rather than the point, and watch the index rather than the quote.
The vessel is usually the minority of the installed cost
Foundations, setting and rigging, interconnecting pipework, valves and trim, instrumentation, electrical, commissioning, and the authority-having-jurisdiction approval process together typically exceed the vessel. This is the single most common estimating error on these projects: a budget built from a tank quote and a contingency, with the balance of plant discovered later. Estimate the installed system and treat the vessel as one line within it.
Nobody has ever been surprised by the price of the tank. They are surprised by the foundation, the rigging, and the approval that the tank cannot operate without.
Get the requirement fixed before quoting
The largest source of cost growth on these projects is a requirement that moves after fabrication starts, and the usual culprit is the design pressure or the capacity changing once the suppression system hydraulics are finalized. Complete the hydraulic calculation for the protected hazard first, since that determines both volume and pressure, and only then request vessel quotes. Quoting before the hydraulics are settled produces a number that will not survive, and a fabrication change order costs far more than the equivalent scope quoted up front.
