Manufacturing Cost and Quoting
Hose Assembly Cost Estimator Excel Template
Cost a hydraulic or industrial hose assembly from its overall length and end fittings, and price it cost-plus at five quantities with the hose, fittings, labour and setup shown line by line.
Free, and a plain .xlsx with no macros to enable. A CSV with live formulas and a printed how-to guide come with it.
Overview
This hose assembly cost estimator is a working Excel quoting tool for hydraulic and industrial hose shops. You keep your hose and fitting catalogue on Setup, with each hose's price per foot or metre and each fitting's cut-off allowance and price, so a quote is a matter of picking the hose and two ends and typing the overall length. It ships with a fictional hose shop quoting a 36 inch SAE 100R2AT -08 assembly with a straight and a 90 degree JIC female swivel end, so every figure is populated when you open it.
The hose cut length is the overall length minus the two fittings' cut-off allowances: 36 - 1.55 - 2.35 = 32.1 inches, or 2.675 feet, which at $2.85 a foot plus 3% cut waste is $7.85 of hose. Fittings with their ferrules and the extras are priced per assembly, labour is timed by operation at the labour rate plus overhead, and the die change, test rig setup and test certificate are a fixed job cost spread over the quantity. Cost per assembly follows the Cost per Hose Assembly calculator and the cost-plus price follows the Hose Assembly Quote Price calculator.
In the example the assembly costs $21.26 at 150 pieces and $27.20 at 10, because the $63.63 of setup and fixed job cost is spread over fewer assemblies; at a 30% markup the unit price is $27.65 at 150 and $35.40 at 10. The download is a plain .xlsx with no macros. A CSV with live formulas is also included for other tools; the catalogue, dropdowns, dashboard and self-check are in the .xlsx.
What this template includes
- Hose and fitting catalogue on Setup: hose price per foot or per metre, and each fitting's cut-off allowance and price with its ferrule
- Cut length from overall length minus both fittings' cut-off allowances, in inches or millimetres, with a cut-waste allowance and a check that the fittings fit
- Extras table for sleeves, caps, tags and adapters, and a labour table with seconds per assembly and setup minutes per batch for each operation
- Five quantity breaks with hose, fittings and extras, labour with overhead, setup and fixed job cost spread, cost per assembly, markup, tooling charge, a rounded unit price, extended price and labour hours
- Dashboard for the quantity you pick: unit price, cost, margin and cut length tiles, price and cost by quantity, where the cost goes, and the price build-up
- Method sheet with every formula, and a Verify sheet that re-checks the formulas against an independent reference and the Cost per Hose Assembly and Hose Assembly Quote Price calculators (Self-check: PASS)
- CSV with live formulas for the quantity breaks; the catalogue, dropdowns, dashboard and self-check are in the .xlsx
Suggested use case
Use it at the counter or in the estimating office to quote a hose assembly in minutes, to see how setup spreads over the quantity, or to check that a quoted price still covers today's hose and fitting prices.
How to use it
- On Setup, enter your company name, currency, labour rate, overhead, markup and price step, then your hoses with their price per foot or metre and your fittings with their cut-off allowances and prices.
- On Estimate, pick the hose, the length unit and the two end fittings, and type the overall length and cut waste; the Check cell confirms the fittings fit.
- Add the extras for this assembly, check the labour operations and their times, and enter any fixed job cost such as a test certificate.
- Type the five quantities you want to quote and read the cost per assembly, unit price and margin for each.
- On the Dashboard, pick a quantity to see the tiles, the charts and the price build-up.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do you calculate hose cut length for an assembly?
- Overall length minus the cut-off allowance of each end fitting, taken from the fitting manufacturer's catalogue for that hose and fitting series. A 36 inch assembly with fittings of 1.55 and 2.35 inch cut-off needs 36 - 1.55 - 2.35 = 32.1 inches of hose. Measure elbows to their centreline, as the catalogue does.
- How is the cost of a hose assembly worked out?
- Hose cut length x price per foot (plus cut waste) + both fittings with ferrules + extras + timed labour with overhead + setup and fixed job cost / quantity. In the example: $7.85 hose + $10.23 fittings and extras + $2.76 labour + $0.42 fixed = $21.26 per assembly at 150 pieces, the Cost per Hose Assembly calculator's model.
- How do I price a hose assembly from its cost?
- Cost x (1 + markup), plus any tooling charge divided by the quantity, rounded up to your price step. At a 30% markup, $21.26 becomes $27.64, rounded up to $27.65. A 30% markup on cost is a 23.1% margin on price; the workbook shows both.
- Why is the price per assembly so much higher at small quantities?
- Because the crimp die change, test rig setup and paperwork are paid once per order. In the example they total $63.63, which is $6.36 per assembly at 10 pieces and $0.42 at 150; that alone moves the cost from $21.26 to $27.20.
- Does the workbook check pressure rating or bend radius?
- No. It costs and prices the assembly. Check the working pressure and the minimum bend radius against the application with the Hose Assembly Pressure Margin and Hose Bend Radius Check calculators before you quote.
- Does the workbook use macros?
- No. It is a plain .xlsx with ordinary formulas, tables, dropdowns and native charts, so it opens without enabling macros. The Verify sheet re-checks the formulas against fixed test cases and shows Self-check: PASS.
