Additive Manufacturing Service Bureau Quoting calculator
Resin Service Cost Calculator
Resin Service Cost is the dollar charge a vat-photopolymerization bureau bills for the resin a job consumes plus the handling around it. SLA, DLP and LCD prints draw down expensive engineering and castable resins, and beyond the cured volume there is vat decanting, IPA washing, filtration and disposal that raw material price alone never captures. Quoting staff at resin bureaus use this to recover real consumable cost on small, high-mix jobs where a flat per-part price would either overcharge tiny parts or lose money on resin-hungry ones. It keeps the messy, labor-heavy side of resin printing visible in the quote.
What this calculator does
- Estimate resin printing material and handling cost from resin volume, resin price, billable capture, and vat or wash setup charge.
- an SLA or DLP service bureau estimator needs a resin cost line for a customer quote
- It computes the quoted resin service cost by combining the billable consumed-resin cost with a fixed vat and wash handling charge.
Formula used
- Captured resin cost = resin volume × resin price × billable resin capture
- Resin service cost = captured resin cost + vat/wash handling charge
Inputs explained

- Resin purchase price:
- Resin volume billed to customer:
- Vat and wash handling charge:
How to use the result
- Use it when quoting SLA, DLP or LCD jobs where resin volume varies widely and post-print washing and vat handling are real labor costs.
- It assumes a single resin price and does not model resin shelf-life loss, failed-print resin waste, or the cost of consumables like wash IPA degrading over many cycles.
Current U.S. benchmarks
- The producer price index for plastic resins and materials stands at 319.371 (BLS, May 2026), up 19.5% from a year earlier. Quotes priced off last quarter's material cost miss this move.
- The U.S. prime lending rate is 6.75% (Federal Reserve via FRED, 2026-07-02). Payback and financing math should start from today's rate, not a remembered one.
Common questions
- How do you calculate resin service cost? Multiply resin volume by price per milliliter and the billable share, then add the vat and wash handling charge. For 520 ml at $0.18/ml fully billed plus $65 handling, the cost is $158.60.
- Why does the effective resin price look higher than the purchase price? The fixed wash-and-vat charge spreads over the consumed milliliters. Here 520 ml of $0.18 resin plus $65 handling gives an effective $0.305/ml — the handling overhead baked into each milliliter.
- Should engineering resins be priced differently from standard resin? Yes — castable, tough and biocompatible resins can cost several times standard resin per milliliter, so enter the actual price for the resin used rather than a blended average that distorts high-value jobs.
- Why charge vat and wash handling separately? Decanting the vat, IPA washing, ultrasonic cleaning and disposal are largely fixed per job regardless of part volume. Keeping the $65 charge separate stops tiny parts from being under-costed on labor.
- Does this include support resin and waste? Enter the total resin the job draws down, including supports and cured cleftover that cannot be reused. Uncured resin returned to the bottle is not consumed and should be excluded from the volume.
