Packaging Automation & End-of-Line Systems calculator
Packaging Station Rate Margin Calculator
Check whether a station rate covers the entered line requirement. Enter both rates in cases per minute on the same operating basis.
What this calculator does
- Compare one packaging station running rate with the required rate on the same time basis.
Formula used
- Rate margin = station rate − required rate
- Required rate coverage = station rate ÷ required rate × 100
Inputs explained
- Station Running Rate: Qualified station capacity on the same basis as demand.
- Required Running Rate: Required cases per minute on the comparison time basis.
How to use the result
- Best suited to station capacity check, required rate sensitivity.
- One station comparison does not locate the bottleneck across a line. Does not model buffers, blocking, starvation or product mix.
Current U.S. benchmarks
- The producer price index for plastic resins and materials stands at 280.569 (BLS, Aug 2026), up 6.6% from a year earlier. Quotes priced off last quarter's material cost miss this move.
- The producer price index for paper (not a paperboard or container index) stands at 282.266 (BLS, Aug 2026), up 10% from a year earlier. Quotes priced off last quarter's material cost miss this move.
Common questions
- Can the station rate be zero? Yes. The margin becomes the negative required rate and coverage becomes zero.
- Does positive margin prove the line can run? No. Other stations, transfers and buffers can still constrain output. This comparison covers only the entered station.
- Why must the required rate be positive? A positive requirement makes coverage meaningful. A zero-demand scheduling question does not need this capacity comparison.
- Should the rates include downtime? Use the same basis for both. If the station rate excludes downtime, translate the requirement to the corresponding running-time basis.
