  • How do you calculate steam cost for a process run? Multiply the steam use rate by runtime to get total steam consumed, then multiply by your loaded cost per klb. With 4.5 klb/hr for 3 hr at $14/klb, that is 13.5 klb x $14 = $189.
  • What is a good loaded steam cost per 1,000 lb? For natural-gas boilers, fully loaded steam typically runs $8-$20 per klb depending on fuel price, boiler efficiency, and feedwater treatment. Anything above $25/klb usually points to poor efficiency, heavy blowdown, or condensate not being returned.
  • Why use loaded cost instead of just fuel cost? Fuel is only part of the picture. Loaded steam cost also captures feedwater, chemical treatment, blowdown losses, and boiler efficiency, so the per-run figure reflects what steam actually costs to make, not just the gas bill.
