Foundry & Forging calculator
Sand Reclaim Rate Calculator
Sand reclaim rate is the percentage of used foundry molding sand that a mechanical or thermal reclamation system returns to usable, bond-ready condition instead of sending it to landfill. Foundry process engineers and sustainability managers track it because new sand purchases, disposal tonnage, and binder consumption all hinge on how much sand the loop recovers. A few points of reclaim rate translates directly into raw-material spend and waste-haul cost across a year of pours. This calculator gives you the live rate and, just as importantly, the gap to the target you have committed to.
What this calculator does
- Calculate reclaimed sand rate from recovered usable sand versus total sand handled.
- Use it when reclaim efficiency affects sand purchases, disposal cost, binder demand, and mold quality.
- It computes the reclaim rate as reclaimed usable sand divided by total sand processed, then the point gap between that rate and your target.
Formula used
- Sand Reclaim Rate rate = reclaimed usable sand ÷ total sand processed × 100
- Sand Reclaim Rate gap to target = calculated rate - target reclaim rate
Inputs explained
- Reclaimed usable sand:
- Total sand processed:
- Target reclaim rate:
How to use the result
- Use it on a routine reporting cadence and whenever you change binder system, reclamation equipment settings, or sand-to-metal ratio.
- It measures recovery percent only; it does not judge reclaimed-sand quality such as LOI, fines content, or residual binder, which can fail even at a high reclaim rate.
Current U.S. benchmarks
- The producer price index for steel mill products stands at 348.53 (BLS, May 2026), up 6.7% from a year earlier. Quotes priced off last quarter's material cost miss this move.
- The U.S. has 3,569 primary metal manufacturing establishments employing about 354,911 workers (Census County Business Patterns, 2023).
Common questions
- How do you calculate sand reclaim rate? Divide reclaimed usable sand by total sand processed and multiply by 100. With 32,000 lb reclaimed from 40,000 lb processed, the reclaim rate is 80%.
- What is a good sand reclaim rate for a foundry? Mechanical reclamation on green sand often recovers 70 to 80%, while thermal reclamation of chemically bonded sand can exceed 90 to 95%. The 80% in this example is solid for a mechanical system but short of a thermal target.
- What does the gap to target mean here? It is your actual rate minus your target rate in percentage points. At 80% actual against a 78% target the gap is +2 points; the calculator shows -2 when the target is listed above actual, signaling you are either ahead of or behind your commitment depending on sign.
- Why is reclaim rate important for cost? Every pound not reclaimed is a pound of new sand bought and a pound of spent sand disposed. Moving from 78% to 80% on 40,000 lb saves 800 lb of new sand purchase and the matching disposal cost per cycle.
- Does a high reclaim rate guarantee good casting quality? No. You can reclaim a high percentage and still have rising fines, high loss-on-ignition, or residual binder that hurts surface finish and causes veining. Always pair reclaim rate with a sand-quality check.
