Packaging Automation & End-of-Line Systems calculator

Pallet Pattern Capacity Utilization Calculator

Measure how much of a qualified pallet pattern is occupied. Enter loaded case count, capacity for the same pattern and your utilization target.

What this calculator does

  • Compare loaded cases with the capacity of an entered qualified pallet pattern.

Formula used

  • Capacity utilization = occupied cases ÷ qualified capacity × 100
  • Unused positions = qualified capacity − occupied cases
  • Target margin = capacity utilization − target utilization

Inputs explained

  • Occupied Case Positions: Whole cases loaded in the selected pallet arrangement.
  • Qualified Pattern Capacity: Approved case count for the same pattern and layer arrangement.
  • Target Capacity Utilization: Your chosen occupied-share target for this qualified pattern.

How to use the result

  • Best suited to qualified pattern occupancy, pallet fill target review.
  • Does not optimize pallet geometry or approve load stability. Case strength, load weight and transport conditions require separate assessment.

Current U.S. benchmarks

  • As of Aug 2026, U.S. manufacturing runs at 75.7% of capacity (Federal Reserve via FRED), down 0.1 points from a year earlier. Enter your own plant's utilization; the national figure is a reference point for how loaded the industry is.
  • The producer price index for plastic resins and materials stands at 280.569 (BLS, Aug 2026), up 6.6% from a year earlier. Quotes priced off last quarter's material cost miss this move.
  • The producer price index for paper (not a paperboard or container index) stands at 282.266 (BLS, Aug 2026), up 10% from a year earlier. Quotes priced off last quarter's material cost miss this move.

Common questions

  • Does this find the best pallet pattern? No. Enter an already selected and qualified capacity. The calculator measures how much of that capacity is occupied.
  • Why cannot occupied cases exceed capacity? The comparison uses one fixed qualified arrangement. A larger count means the capacity or arrangement must be reviewed.
  • Does a full pallet mean a stable load? No. Stability and strength depend on the case, arrangement, load and transport conditions, beyond this occupancy ratio.
  • Can the target be zero? Yes. It is a comparison percentage. The qualified pattern capacity must still be a positive whole case count.
