Wire, Cable & Conductor Manufacturing calculator
Cable Twist Pitch Calculator
Calculate axial twist pitch from line speed and inserted twists. Enter actual twists per minute and the construction’s specified nominal pitch.
What this calculator does
- Calculate axial twist pitch from line speed and inserted twists.
Formula used
- Axial pitch (mm) = Line speed (m/min) × 1,000 ÷ Inserted twists/min
- Pitch deviation = Calculated pitch − Specified pitch
- Twists per meter = Inserted twists/min ÷ Line speed
Inputs explained
- Axial Line Speed: Axial advance at the twisting point.
- Actual Inserted Twists: Measured or specified inserted twists, including machine kinematics.
- Specified Twist Pitch: Nominal axial pitch from the cable construction.
How to use the result
- Best suited to twinner setup checks, pitch and speed comparison.
- Transient speed changes, slip and final relaxed lay require separate measurement.
Current U.S. benchmarks
- The producer price index for primary nonferrous metals (a broad metals benchmark, not copper alone) stands at 544.731 (BLS, Aug 2026), up 49.3% from a year earlier. Quotes priced off last quarter's material cost miss this move. Global copper trades at $13,543 per tonne (IMF via FRED, Jul 2026).
- The U.S. has 5,397 electrical equipment and appliances establishments employing about 369,437 workers (Census County Business Patterns, 2023).
Common questions
- Can rotor RPM be entered directly? Only if the machine’s documented kinematics make it equal to actual inserted twists per minute.
- Is double-twist multiplication automatic? No. Supply actual inserted twists after applying the verified machine relation.
- Does zero deviation prove acceptance? No. Verify the final construction and its actual tolerances.
- Why require positive line speed? The model also reports twists per axial meter, which is undefined for stopped cable.
