Cylindrical Coating Area Calculator

Calculate exposed sidewall area for identical cylindrical parts after masking. Enter the coating diameter, axial length, masked patches and whole part count.

What this calculator does

  • Calculate exposed sidewall area for identical cylindrical parts after masking.

Formula used

  • Gross sidewall mm² = π × Diameter mm × Axial length mm
  • Net area per part m² = (Gross sidewall mm² − Masked mm²) ÷ 1000000
  • Batch coating area = Net area per part × Part count
  • Masked batch area = Masked mm² per part × Parts ÷ 1000000

Inputs explained

  • Coating-Surface Diameter: Cylinder diameter at the surface being coated.
  • Axial Coating Length: Axial sidewall length before masked patches are deducted.
  • Masked Area per Part: Additional masked sidewall area within the stated coating length.
  • Identical Cylindrical Parts: Whole parts sharing these dimensions and masking.

How to use the result

  • Best suited to shaft coating estimates, sleeve masking deductions.
  • The geometry excludes end faces, taper, grooves and substantial diameter growth during deposition.

Current U.S. benchmarks

  • Industrial electricity averages 9.77 cents per kWh across the U.S. (EIA, Jul 2026), up 4.7% from a year earlier. Energy-intensive steps carry this directly into unit cost.
  • The producer price index for industrial chemicals stands at 336.006 (BLS, Aug 2026), up 13.3% from a year earlier. Quotes priced off last quarter's material cost miss this move.
  • The U.S. has 14,543 chemical manufacturing establishments employing about 911,245 workers (Census County Business Patterns, 2023).

Common questions

  • Are both cylinder ends included? No. This model calculates only the curved sidewall inside the entered axial length.
  • Should an uncoated end band be deducted twice? No. Either shorten the coating length or enter that band as masked area, using one method consistently.
  • Can I calculate an internal bore? Yes, for a cylindrical bore wall using its internal diameter and coated length. Accessibility and spray angle still require process review.
  • Which diameter should I use? Use the diameter of the cylindrical surface whose area you need. Substantial diameter growth requires a separate geometry calculation.
