Industrial Cleaning, Washing & Parts Cleanliness calculator

Basket Volume Occupancy Calculator

Check solid-volume occupancy and parts payload for a basket load. Enter part geometry, mass, usable basket volume and applicable load limits.

What this calculator does

  • Compare solid part volume and weight with entered basket limits.

Formula used

  • Solid volume occupancy % = Parts × Part volume ÷ (Basket liters × 10)
  • Parts payload = Parts × Part mass
  • Payload margin = Qualified payload − Parts payload
  • Volume margin = Entered occupancy limit − Occupancy %

Inputs explained

  • Parts in Basket: Whole parts placed in the selected basket arrangement.
  • Solid Volume per Part: Part solid volume from geometry or displacement measurements.
  • Basket Usable Volume: Usable internal basket volume for the stated loading boundary.
  • Mass per Part: Measured mass of one representative part.
  • Qualified Basket Payload: Applicable basket payload rating for this handling arrangement.
  • Entered Volume Occupancy Limit: User-qualified solid-volume occupancy limit for this comparison.

How to use the result

  • Best suited to basket load reviews, cleaning fixture comparisons.
  • Solid-volume ratios do not prove geometric fit or cleaning exposure. Fixtures and other carried items must be accounted for in the available payload.

Current U.S. benchmarks

  • U.S. manufacturing runs at 75.7% of capacity (Federal Reserve, Aug 2026). New factory orders are up 8.5% year over year (Census).

Common questions

  • Does a low occupancy prove the parts fit? No. Packing voids, part shape and orientation can prevent fit even when solid volume is a small fraction of basket volume.
  • Does this validate cleaning exposure? No. Shadowing, drainage and fluid access depend on the qualified arrangement and process.
  • Where does fixture weight belong? Subtract fixture and other carried weight from the payload available to the parts before entering the qualified basket payload.
  • Why can occupancy exceed 100 percent? The arithmetic preserves an over-capacity or inconsistent-input diagnostic rather than clipping it to an apparently acceptable value.
