Gravimetric Versus Volumetric Feed Delta Calculator
Compare a fixed volumetric setting with a required mass-flow setpoint. Enter volumetric delivery, current bulk density and the gravimetric target.
What this calculator does
- Compare a fixed volumetric setting with a required mass-flow setpoint.
Formula used
- Fixed-volume mass flow = Volumetric rate × Current bulk density
- Mass-flow delta = Fixed-volume mass flow − Gravimetric setpoint
- Required volume = Mass setpoint ÷ Current bulk density
Inputs explained
- Fixed Volumetric Feed Rate: Measured volume delivered per hour at the fixed setting.
- Current Bulk Density: Loose bulk density representative of material at the feeder.
- Gravimetric Mass Setpoint: Required ingredient mass rate for the same process.
How to use the result
- Best suited to density change comparisons, feeding method reviews.
- Does not simulate screw fill, material compaction or control dynamics.
Common questions
- Does gravimetric feeding ignore bulk density? It measures mass and can adjust the feed device, but refill and mechanical limits still affect performance.
- Is loose bulk density always the correct value? Use a density representative of the metering zone; compaction can make a laboratory value unrepresentative.
- What does a negative delta mean? The fixed volumetric setting delivers less mass than the required setpoint at the entered density.
- Is the required volume an equipment setting? It is a volume-flow requirement. Convert it to a setting using a qualified material-specific feeder test.
